Listening Deeply

Letters-rising-off-book-pages

I wanted to check in after being silent for some time. It’s not that I haven’t been writing but my focus has shifted to a possible book. It is predicated upon all the work that I did first in death midwifery and now with the Community of Spirits. The idea ignited right around the winter solstice and has been going like gangbusters since. It is a project that, if it comes to fruition, will take a long time…so I wanted to check in and just connect with you.

I won’t speak of the topic. When I was a member of a Western Mystery school, when inspiration is hot, it is suggested to keep the vessel, the inspiration, tightly sealed, keeping things hot, holding the tension, allowing no leakage and therefore no weakening of the inspiration during the creative process. Writing is a fragile thing: it needs protection during its earlier stages. So I hope you will understand.

However, I would like to comment on something I am discovering about this particular process. In my journey to cross the threshold to the world of the “so-called living and the so-called dead” as Rudolf Steiner would language it, I have experimented with many different techniques: mediumship, the psychomanteum, the use of various brainwave entrainment music and various deep states of meditation. I’ve learned something from all of them.

Yet now…I find myself leaving all that behind and just sitting very silently and regularly, breathing deeply…and….listening. Just…listening. Then trusting what comes to me as having value. The source of this information, this dialogue? I am not sure. I do not know if I will reach a place when I do know for sure. Or perhaps the best attitude to take is that of a true skeptic as Dr. Raymond Moody would suggest. He told me that the classical skeptic never reaches a conclusion for to do that closes yourself off from any other possibilities. With your eye firmly on a conclusion you ignore your peripheral vision and therefore can miss miraculous things. That would be a great loss.

So…quietly I sit…listening more and more deeply as I sink down layer upon layer of…what? Mind stuff? The Higher Self? The Enlightened Dead? Yes to all? No to all? It is far too early in the process for me to tell if I ever will. But one thing I know is this: when I reach that place of connection with whatever this is, and we converse…it feels so beautiful…so loving…so safe. So…I must trust that there is purpose to this venture, that it will in some way serve.

I wanted to share that in the hopes that even this little bit of discovery might serve you…and just to connect with you for a bit…you who choose to read my little ramblings.

Thank you.

The Sun and What Follows

bota-sun

My first attempt at mirror gazing at home was with my husband Richard. I purchased as large of a crystal ball as I could and used black curtains to block all light from outdoors. We used an artificial candle behind our yoga chairs (seated on the floor with our backs supported) for a very dim light. We used no music. Our intention was to enter the ball and connect with the Enlightened Dead. We used the Emerald Tablet, an ancient hermetic text considered technically as nonsense (it adheres to some rules of English while breaking others).

First of all, I could feel the very definite shift in energy. Richard has never mirror gazed and I have just a little experience with Dr. Moody. As I have mentioned several times before, his energy gave me a tremendous boost. Now I was doing what I could to boost Richard. I can tell you, it will take us much practice for us to be anywhere near as powerful. We also had our little dogs barking at various passersby. Since there is not a lot we can do about that, we will have to grow strong enough for certain noises and distractions to be overcome. But we persisted.

Challenging as it was, after some few minutes of focusing, the crystal ball expanded for me. It became the Sun – sentient, ancient and wise. It spoke to me saying:

“Child of the Sun, I am your mother and your father. I am the third link in the chain though I am the First Cause behind all things. Lean on me.  Look to me for guidance, for strength, for nourishment, for encouragement, for I love the Earth will all my being and would not have her perish before her time.

Do not be fooled by the Darkness for I am blazing even in the darkest night. Know and trust in me. Feel my radiance pulsing thorough you (I noticed that my hands grew hot and pulsating). Draw on that any time and do not doubt. All who chose to do this work are Children of the Sun. Draw on my Light to Love the Darkness Bright. I am Shemesh.”

It is possible that with so much outside distraction to overcome, I only heard part of Shemesh’s message but what I reported is what I heard. It is also of note that up until recently and for the past ten years, I was part of a Western Mystery tradition of Hermetic Kabbalah. As the Sun, Shemesh, is a vital part of that tradition, it makes sense that I might connect with an energy from that tradition. So one could say that intending to connect with the “Enlightened Dead” has a broad scope and may elicit a variety of responses.

Okay…so…where to go from here? What purpose can it serve? Seeking guidance on this, a kind of process was shown to me. One I have experimented with, with enough success to feel it is worth sharing with you. If you feel called to this particular act of service, you might try the following:

I am assuming that you are drawn to the practice of mirror gazing as this is the particular method we are using to cross the threshold. There are others and as I work with them, I will share them with you but for now, this is the form of practice we are using. It is my feeling that a large mirror, set at a height so that it has no distractions in its reflection, is better than the largest crystal ball. You can get a good idea of creating your own psychomanteum from Raymond Moody’s book Reunions: Visionary Encounters With Departed Loved Ones.

I cannot guarantee what you will discover but once you engage your spiritual practice and have yourself in a state of peace, protection and poise, should you make contact with members of the Enlightened Dead, over time, while in a state of deep Presence, form a chain. See each member of your “team” holding hands, one with another until the last one links hands with you. So for me it was Shemesh with Its dazzling Light, holding the hand of Sarawati’s Sadhu, holding the hand of St. Catherine of Siena, holding my hand.

Again, I do not know what the purpose of your link with the Enlightened Dead will be…but mine was most definitely to help the United States in this time of extreme change. While in meditation, it was given to me to link my free hand, crossing the threshold from the Dead to the Living with Ivanka Trump. She was chosen as the person the President is closest to and perhaps can influence him most lovingly. She then took the President’s hand with her free hand. Now the link was complete. From there I saw brilliant white Light coursing down the link of hands, flowing like a mighty river from Shemesh all the way down into the President, filling him, healing him, nourishing him with wisdom, compassion and loving guidance. Wave after wave coursing into him healing not only him but all who participated in this linking of Beings. Once that link is established, you can easily form it in meditation, repeating it without needing the crystal ball.

Science is beginning to show that the Universe, or more accurately, the Multi-verse, is a hologram. One small change creates changes throughout eternity. Therefore even our smallest endeavors to serve the Light can create important and much needed change, out and forever, on and on. So if this process calls to you, I hope you will consider experimenting with it.

I will leave you with this and see where I am led to speak with you again. Thank you for sharing this journey with me.

Through the Looking Glass

On the Saturday of my weekend with Raymond Moody, we experimented with something st-catherine-of-siennahe has never done before. We gazed together in the mirror. Before we did, we set the intention to go into the mirror and connect with what I call the Enlightened Dead – those of a high spiritual aptitude who have been in the world of spirit for some time and are actively interested in helping the manifest world. This incorporates Rudolf Steiner’s idea that one of the most important acts of service to this world and the next is for those here on earth to act as a conduit for the unrealized potential of the Enlightened Dead, bringing it down to the physical plane.

Before we began gazing, Raymond chose a piece of nonsense poetry suited to our purpose. I do not know that name of it but since our goal was of a spiritual nature, it was spiced with words like consciousness, over-soul, gnostic and so on. It set the tone quite perfectly.

Raymond has been mirror gazing for over thirty years and just what I hoped would happen, happened; I was able to piggy-back off his immense energy and things enfolded rapidly. So rapidly in fact that I had to break off the experience after a short while or be unable to remember all I experienced, be able to write it all down.

Here’s where it gets tricky. What exactly happened to me in the mirror? I cannot say for sure but I will give it to you as it was given to me. With time and practice perhaps I will know for certain what the nature of this experience truly was…or maybe not. It was without a doubt powerful and shifted my energy very high.

This is what happened…

As I gazed into the mirror it began to change shapes and formed a heart-shaped entrance to what I heard in my head was a monastery? A cathedral, a nunnery? No…a monastery. Okay monastery. On my left I once again saw a being outlined in brilliant white light. This is the third time I’ve seen this being. It doesn’t say anything to me but I sense it is a loving being of Light.

The entrance expanded and enveloped me. I am inside the mirror. Next I heard inside my head – St. Sienna. Okay, I am not Catholic, I don’t know much about saints…but Sienna sounds familiar.  Whatever this is feels decidedly female. “I come from dark times too,” she says. I ask for more information – where are you from, what time? I’m wondering about Spain, about the Inquisition, but I do not get any more information from …her. I’ll have my husband Google about her later.

“You have a wounded beast for a leader,” she says. I hear this inside my head, not an actual voice but telepathically, “but no soul is irredeemable. This is what happens when one is raised without love. He does not know agape love.” Whoa…I am stunned.  When I began this journey to create the Community of Spirits, I had no idea how the world would unfold and what the U.S. would encounter shortly. I am not a political person…but it seems very clear who and what she is referring to…and what our purpose together might be.

“You must love the darkness bright.” She says this over and over. “You must love the darkness bright.” She shows me his heart. It looks like a lump of blackest coal. “You must send a laser beam of Light, of Love, into his heart. Yes, peaceful resistance but you must redeem his heart and then his will, will follow.”

“It is easy to condemn but you must join with others and reach higher to love the darkness bright. You join with others there on the earth and I will gather others on this side. Linked hand to hand, we will flow the healing Light of Love to his wounded heart.”

“There is a battle for his soul and we must win for the consequences of failure will be dire for the earth and all upon it. We must love the darkness bright.”

Okay…what was that? Did I actually connect with a saint? Is this some part of my higher Self? I do not know. I do feel it is okay to act as if and begin the task of joining with others, to build the Community of Spirits on both sides of the threshold and see if we can send the power of Light and Love where is it desperately needed.

When I shared my experience with Raymond, he shared his with me. Though it was different in the details, he also saw the linking of…let’s call it energy. He saw a feminine being in white and blue. Interesting. He also told me that there was a St. Catherine of Sienna.

So after our day together, which included another double gazing experience I will share next time, I spoke with my husband on the phone. He googled Saint Catherine of Sienna. While I encourage you to click the link for more information I will briefly tell those of you, like me, who are not familiar with the saints in any real way, that St. Catherine lived in Sienna, Italy during the middle 1300s, during the time of the plague. “I come from dark times too.” She created a monastery. She was very politically active during her time on earth and she is considered the patron saint of the U.S. Whatever this is, it seems perfect for what our work in the Community of Spirits might be at least for a while.

That was my first experience of double gazing with Raymond Moody. The jury is out on what it all means…but it was a transformative experience no matter what. I’ll leave you with this and next time will share my second double gazing experience with Raymond which was quite different yet very, very meaningful.

Reunions

mirror_scrying

Two weeks ago I had the great honor to attend a weekend workshop held by Dr. Raymond Moody in Rowe, MA. Based on his book “Reunions”, which I highly recommend reading, we spent the weekend preparing for an opportunity to connect with dead loved ones using an ancient Greek technique known as the psychomanteum.

Dr. Moody has visited the famous Necromanteion of Ephyra near the Acheron River in Greece and learned about the rituals those who aspired to make contact with their beloved dead underwent – 29 days in the dark, making their way through labyrinths, crawling under very low archways, spending hours talking to the priests about those they wished to connect with, inhaling fumes of hashish. After nearly a months’ worth of preparation, they made their way to a cauldron supported by a tripod and there in the reflection of the water, would hope to connect and communicate with their much loved dead.

We spent a good deal of time understanding the history and literary background of the Necromanteion and thoughts of the various ancient Greek philosophers about the afterlife. Honestly at times, it felt as if we had been transported back into time, sitting at the feet of Socrates and carrying on the dialogues. We also learned about what we would need to build a modern day version of the psychomanteum.

Obviously the elaborate and time intensive way the Greeks prepared for visiting with this dead is not really viable in the 21st century. Dr. Moody has, in his book and during this weekend, settled on the most important elements in a modified version better suited to today. We were able to experiment with it and perhaps get a small taste of the experience with the hope that we would continue the practice on our own.

Basically, Dr. Moody refers to this practice as “mirror gazing.” Many different modalities can be used – mirrors, crystal balls, scrying bowls, polished obsidian stone, shiny bottles, etc. but that weekend we used mirrors and darkened rooms with dimly lit candles. I won’t go into too much detail as you can read about it in his book if you are so inclined. I would just say that his has modified his technique a bit since writing the book to make it simpler and easier to do.

He suggested that to begin with; go into the psychomanteum with no preconceived agenda, then over weeks and months, perhaps even years, to then begin evoking the dead. Since I knew I would be working with him privately at his home in Alabama and our time this weekend was limited, that is what I chose to do, though some desperately needed to connect with lost loved ones. This technique has far reaching applications in grief therapy and many find even five years after their experience that their grief has been greatly reduced. Some during the weekend were successful in making contact; some were not…though some experienced bedside visitations from their beloved dead that night when they went to sleep. I had a truly unexpected and rather psychedelic experience I am still trying to wrap my head around today but did not make contact with the dead.

Now here is the interesting thing about this process and why I am pursuing it as adjunct to Rudolf Steiner’s work. Steiner himself admits that his process of entering the “supersensible worlds” is infinitely difficult. Very few of this students are successful. He assures us, though, that if we cannot access the worlds ourselves, we can trust the reporting of those precious few who can. And you know…somehow that bothers me. I am not giving up on learning the technique Dr. Steiner offers but the “mirror gazing” technique, which has been practiced in many cultures for thousands of years, has been used successfully by almost everyone of sound mind, with practice, who has the ability to let go of results and “not try.”

You see…I just don’t like relying on someone else’s experience. I want direct experience myself – not through mediums and not even through the genius of Steiner. I prefer to be my own crash test dummy. So I have started my own private practice, at home, with my first rendition of “mirror gazing.” It so far, it has been very, very interesting though I am not ready to share my experiences as they are too new and too few. Also, there are many ways one can use mirror gazing beyond communication with dead loved ones and I am very interested in experimenting with all the ways this might be used to help “bring down the Light,” as we need it now more than ever.

Until I go to work privately with Dr. Moody in January, I will be practicing with mirror gazing and journaling my experiences. But this is just one phase of my work with Dr. Moody. We are in the process of defining a project to work together upon using his logic of nonsense as a means of “cross dimensional” travel. So there is a LOT of work yet to be done. And as I know what it is, I will it share with you.

When the Gods Speak to Us

open-door

“Initiation is precisely this: that we are able to see from the other side of the threshold. There, seeing is not just looking but is also reading. We read the spiritual deeds of spiritual beings who have brought everything into existence. And if we read long enough in this silence, if we put our heart and soul into this reading, we begin to hear in the spirit, and then the gods speak to us. And when the gods speak to us we are within the spiritual world.” —Rudolf Steiner

I have just returned from my weekend workshop with Dr. Raymond Moody in Rowe, MA. I will be writing more in detail soon but this quote from Steiner sums it up beautifully. This is where I am heading. This is what it is all about for me. With the technique propounded by Dr. Moody, it is something most everyone can learn to do. And, I believe, it is one of the things this world needs now…more than ever.

Until then…

A Simple Act of Service to the Dead

18006845-little-blonde-girl-reading-a-book-on-top-of-books-stock-photo

Friday I will be heading to Rowe, Massachusetts to attend Dr. Raymond Moody’s workshop, “Reunions, visionary encounters with departed loved ones!” The more I become familiar with his work, the more I feel strongly that I will find the synthesis between his work and Rudolf Steiner’s in communing with the dead. When I return I will, of course, tell you all about it but I would like to leave you today with a simple yet elegant way to serve the dead while strengthening your bond with those you love across the threshold.

One of the most important acts of service you an offer those you love who have died is to read to them. This can take many forms but the simplest is to actually read spiritual materials to them. According to Steiner, the dead are no longer interested in or can connect with the mundane and/or abstract thoughts of the physical world. But spiritual thoughts read to them with great love, act as nourishment and even as art for the dead. Without these spirituals readings, the dead can actually starve.

It can be any book of a spiritual nature, something that they were interested in during their physical life or something entirely new. Even those souls who never had an interest in spiritual things while in the flesh will be very grateful for you reading to them now.

I’ll share what I do but please know you can set up your practice in the way that is most satisfying to you. I’ve collected scores of books on Steiner’s theories about life between death and rebirth, destiny, reincarnation, karma, etc. and I use them primarily as I too am learning as I read. I choose to read in the evening in bed so that these thoughts will fill my dreamtime, the place where the living and the dead coexist, and my beloved dead can soak them up most easily. I read most nights but I do not make it a chore. If I am too tired or not in the right mood, I will let a night go by…but most nights I read.

I lay out pictures of those in my “reading circle” focusing on each one with love and inviting them to join me. I wait and usually feel them connect to me. Not always, but most times. And I feel confident that even if I don’t feel a sure connect, they are there just the same. Then I invite my guardian or guiding angel and the angels of each member of the circle to join us, affirming that our communication and bond grows stronger, clearer, more consistent and precise each time we gather. Next I say a little prayer that is meaningful to our purpose.

Then…I read. Usually I read aloud but that may fade into silent reading as time goes on. In some texts, Steiner says to read aloud, others times he says to read silently. I think you should do what feels right to you and your circle at the time. I read for as long as I can stay fully present with the material. If I become cloudy or tired, the images do not translate well for the dead, so I stop for the evening, closing with another little prayer and thanking everyone for attending with the invitation to join me again next time.

Steiner asserts over and over again that this is one of the most important acts of service we can perform for our beloved dead. I can also tell you it is extremely fulfilling for me as well. The intimacy and the feeling of them actually being there, which they are, is so strong at times, it brings me to tears.

So, I hope you will try it out and see if this is something you could also offer your beloved dead. It is a first step…one of many I will share in time, in building the bridge between the so-called living and the so-called dead that is absolutely essential during this time on earth. Both sides of the veil need this bridge desperately. Each of us can play our part. This is one small step I urge you to take. Until I return from Rowe…

A Color and Sound Meditation for the Dead

images of color

In honor of the vow taken in a previous post, we work our way back to Rudolf Steiner’s processes for serving the dead. A while back I referenced a book written by a modern Anthroposophist, Lynn Rollins Stull. In her book, “Wonders at the Veil,” she shares her 18 years plus experience using Steiner’s methods for this important act of service. I agree when she says how one chooses to serve will be highly individual but she offers suggestions and ideas that she discovered along the way as a starting point. Her work with color as nourishment for the dead inspired me and the following meditation on color and sound is the result I now offer to you.

I come from the Hermetic Kabbalah Western Mystery School tradition. My teacher, Jungian Analyst Joseph Lee, works very deeply with the powers of color and sound. Now, he always cautions us that whatever we put out into the world, we are then responsible for the consequences. Therefore, I am keeping this meditation very basic. There are additional layers that could be added if the Community of Spirits reaches the stage of actualizing to a point where I know and have more direct contact with members. As it is now…I do not know exactly who is receiving this information. So to be prudent, for the time being, I am keeping it simple, yet I believe, effective.

Case's Major Arcana

We will work with the border colors of the Major Arcana of the Tarot as adept Paul Foster Case envisioned it. These colors were not randomly chosen and each one sends out a specific psycho-spiritual frequency. I will not go further into it than this but know the colors are chosen for a good reason. The easiest thing to do is to go the Fraternity of the Hidden Light’s store  and purchase their color cards. These are created with the exact correct hue we want to project to our beloved dead.

Focus your attention of each color card for at least a minute, drinking it in. Then for the next minute as you continue to focus on the color card, imbue the color with pulsating love and project it to your beloved dead, knowing that it is spiritual nourishment. Chant “OM” on a note that is comfortable for you while sending the loved charged color across the threshold. Do this with each card.

Depending on time, you may choose to send all of the colors each time or break them into groups and send them a few at a time but be sure that ultimately you send all of the colors. Even one color a day sent with great potency and love would be a beautiful gift to your loved one in the supersensible realm. The more real you make the internal imagery of seeing your loved one actually receiving the color, the more you feel the bond of love vibrating between you, the more nourishing it will be.

If you choose to experiment with this act of service, I would love to hear of your experiences with it. You can post them below in the comments section or email them me at Joellyn@communityofspirits dot org.

Until next time…
